Character's full name: Axl
Series: Rockman X
Background:
Axl is a reploid: an android capable of individual thought and feeling, replicated from the data gathered from the famous android, Rockman X. Specifically, he is the prototype for a type of reploid know as the New Gen Reploid, or Copy ‘roid, with the unique ability to shape-shift and take on another’s looks after he has gathered DNA data from them. At his current level, this is limited to others of humanoid shape and roughly his size. For those much larger or smaller than him, Axl can only copy their abilities, not their looks.
Axl’s past is largely a mystery. His memories of activation and the time thereafter are, for the moment at least, beyond his grasp, and his earliest clear recollection is being found by an older Reploid named Red, damaged and alone, with his trademark x-shaped scar across his face.
Red was a mercenary, and leader of a vigilante group called the Red Alert Syndicate, which hunted down Mavericks, as well as those with bounties on their heads. (Their work was not always on the straight and narrow, but neither did they seek to disrupt society. Theirs was not an official group, and therefore was largely disregarded by the government and the Maverick Hunter organization.) After repairing the broken reploid, Red discovered Axl’s unique ability to collect DNA data and shape-shift, and took him into the Red Alert Syndicate. The Syndicate became Axl’s purpose, as well as his family, and he was was eventually accepted by all but Splash Warfly, who was jealous of Axl’s special place in the leader’s eye. The animosity was mutual; never one to take a challenge lying down, Axl tended to give as good as he got.
For several years, Axl ran with the Red Alert Syndicate, and became one of their most valued members. He never bothered to dwell on his missing memories or the origin of his copying skill. He was very close to Red, who both rescued and trained him, and who was essentially the reploid’s foster father. However, the Syndicate’s golden age was not to last. The Red Alert Syndicate had caught the attention of Sigma, a deadly, virus-corrupted Maverick, and this eventually led to their destruction.
From behind the scenes, Sigma approached Red, and lured him with the promise of power. Working according to Sigma’s direction, the Syndicate’s “jobs” became more violent, more dangerous, more Maverick-like. Axl described them as ‘no better than murderers’, and nothing like the friends he used to know. Still, Axl continued to work with them, despite his puzzling new orders to collect as much DNA data as he could, while his friends became more and more powerful. This puzzled Axl, as he was the only reploid who could make use of DNA data. The final straw came when Red demanded Axl hand over all the data he collected. Realizing that he had been used all this time for his ‘stupid ability’, Axl fled the Syndicate and sought out the Maverick Hunters for asylum and to fulfill his secret desire to be a true Maverick Hunter like his idols, Rockman X and Zero.
However, Red was not willing to let Axl simply walk away. He sent Mechanaloids after the boy to bring him back, and it was while escaping from these metal deathbringers that Axl ran into Zero, the legendary Crimson Hunter. Thoroughly displeased with the destruction brought about by Axl’s escapade, but with no other help at hand, Zero was forced to teem up with the wannabe-hunter to take down the Mechanaloid…after which he promptly clapped him in irons and took him to the Hunter HQ. Where they encountered X, then retired from active service. Who was even less pleased.
While Axl was in the Hunters care (unwilling though it was), Red sent a message, offering a challenge to the Hunters for custody of Axl. They tried to refuse, but the damage was done, and Red released eight of his best officers to eight specific points, where they proceeded to cause general chaos. The Seventh Maverick War had begun.
Apologetic but obstinate, Axl recognized the situation as his fault, but point-blank refused to return to the Syndicate. The Hunters had no choice but to rise to the occasion and do what they did best: kick Maverick butt. This time, X would be sitting out of the battle, leaving Zero to do most of the dirty work. Before Zero was deployed, however, Axl struck up a deal with X: as this mess was his fault, let him be the one to put it right. Make Axl a Hunter, and let him fight alongside Zero to take down the Syndicate. X refused to consider granting Axl Hunter status, but did concede to let Axl fight to prove himself. Thus Zero and Axl set out to bring down the Syndicate, one member at a time. As they did, Zero began to learn some disturbing factors: Axl had no memories of anything besides fighting with the Syndicate, nor any idea about the origin of his copy ability; the Syndicate hadn’t ALWAYS acted this way, but something had happened to change them completely; and that no one in the Syndicate had the ability to use DNA data to power up reploids, so there was a missing link between the new strength the reploids had aquired and the data provided by Axl.
Sometime over the course of the War, X could no longer stand to sit by while carnage raged, and decided to tag along with Zero and Axl, if only to do all he could to avoid further bloodshed. Eventually all 8 Syndicate members were defeated, and the location of Red Alert’s base was revealed.
Meanwhile, Red had been approached again by ‘The Professor’—Sigma, who demanded further use of Axl’s power. Red argued that they had ‘set him free’—in the changes Red had seen in the Syndicate, he had, in fact, cut ties with Axl to protect him from a situation he knew the boy would not agree with, and to allow him to become a true Maverick Hunter. He had never sought Axl back at all.
Sigma demanded that Axl be used to collect the most power Reploid data of all: that of Rockman X. Realizing that he, his organization, and his young charge had been used, Red promptly refused to aid his ‘benefactor’ any further. However, Sigma had taken control of the rest of the Syndicate, and Red was backed into the proverbial corner. He now had no choice but to finish what he’d started, and leave it to Axl to end it all.
At the heart of the base, Zero, X, and Axl encountered Red, who cryptically warned them of The Professor, who was pulling the strings behind the whole thing. There was a battle, and Red was critically wounded. In his last moments, Red revealed that the base had been set to self-destruct. With a few fond parting words to Axl, Red ordered the three to leave, and faced the base’s destruction on his own. Zero dragged a distraught Axl from the base just before it detonated, taking Red along with it.
At last, Axl, Zero, and X faced The Professor: Sigma, the perpetrator of this war, just as he had been for the previous six. In a long, drawn out battle, the three were victorious. Just as Axl was about to lead them out, though, a badly damaged Sigma resurfaced and blasted Axl through a wall and out of sight. X and Zero prepared to face off with Sigma once again, but were interrupted by the entrance of another: Red!
Red quickly knocked aside X and Zero, and took his place in front of Sigma. Just as Sigma moved to take Red’s power, however, Red shot him in the face, casting him from the tower. ‘Red’ collapsed, revealing that it had been Axl all along, masquerading as his mentor.
With the conclusion of the war, Axl reminded X of his promise to make him a Maverick Hunter, but X still refused, still torn up about what he viewed as his own past mistakes, and refusing to let Axl follow in his footsteps. Against X’s will, though, Axl proceeded to take part in many Hunter missions, desperate to prove himself.
Time passed, and Axl eventually proved himself worthy enough to be granted Hunter status, progressing quickly to S-Class. He even made peace with X, the two eventually becoming friends. Axl began to mellow out, to take more responsibility, and to think before he acted, although he still remained youthful, impulsive, and trigger-happy.
From Axl’s data, a whole series of Copy Reploids were born, known as the New Generation Reploids, or New Gens. They were put to work constructing something known as the Jakob Project, an elevator used to transport workers and material’s to the new colony being constructed on the moon. These New Gens were invaluable for their ability to shape shift to deal with the changing, occasionally volatile conditions of space. Best of all, they were incapable of going Maverick.
Or so it was thought.
One day, as X was inspecting the Project, there was an explosion, catapulting a car from the elevator, where it crashed into smoldering wreckage. Fearing the worst, X went to investigate, and encountered New Gens in the form of Sigma bodies, which they had utilized to protect themselves from the crash. One of them introduced himself as Lumine, the director of the Jakob Project.
Shortly after, the Eighth Maverick war began, and Zero, X, and Axl charged out to put a stop to it. The ending…was not what they had imagined.
By studying Axl, the Hunters learned that the New Gens’ copy chips apparently contained Sigma data, which apparently made them immune to the Sigma virus. But no one knew what else this might mean. And as if that weren’t enough, who should show up but the man of the hour himself, Sigma. Demanding the trio’s presence on the moon.
Yes, Sigma was behind it all once again…but after he had again been toppled, this time apparently for good, the real mastermind was revealed: Lumine. He claimed that this war had been brought about consciously—that New Gens had the power to go Maverick at will. Dismissing X and Zero as ‘tools of the old world’and Axl as a worthless prototype who refused to see things his way, Lumine made to destroy them and bring about his revolution with the New Gen reploids. Needless to say, the trio quickly put a stop to that, but not before being confronted with a disturbing truth: what was the ultimate destiny of Reploids? Things were no longer as black and white as they had thought.
Lumine was destroyed, but as Axl stepped forward to examine his corpse, blue tentacles launched forward from Lumine’s chest cavity and smashed Axl’s helmet crystal, knocking him out. X and Zero proceeded to blow the corpse to smithereens, but the damage was done. An unconscious Axl was taken home in X’s arms.
Axl eventually awoke, but things were not as he remembered. Thrown into a panic about these sudden revelations regarding New Gens, production was abruptly ceased, and the New Gens taken off the Jakob project for examination. Axl, the prototype, was returned again and again for tests. As if that weren’t enough, no one knew for certain what had happened when Axl was attacked, but from time to time, his color would shift to an unsettlingly familiar lilac and white: Lumine’s colors. It appeared some of Lumine’s data had been transferred to Axl, and this was breeding grounds for more worry and distrust of the New Gens…including Axl.
Axl has become burdened with not only the fate of his kind, but his own fate: is he destined to become a Maverick? The future for our young Reploid is uncertain. It is about this time that Axl found himself drawn into Avoria.
In armor, Axl appears a warrior, but without, he resembles a typical teenager of about 16-18 years, and tends to act like one too, though he is physically at least two, possibly more, centuries old. Reploids don’t grow physically, and hence his appearance never changes.
Personality-wise, Axl is constantly upbeat and cheerful, with a mischievous streak a mile wide. He is impetuous, stubborn, and tends to act without thinking, and in battle tends to be quite trigger-happy (“Just the thought of fightin’ Mavericks makes my trigger finger itch!”). Despite his brash attitude, Axl is quite kind and caring. He takes it upon himself to cheer X and Zero up when their pasts and burdens start bringing them down. He is a tight-lipped secret keeper: if he doesn’t want to tell you, nothing will drag it from him. He is also very self-assured: he follows his own beliefs, regardless of what others say, and remains true to himself. In battle, he is determined, skilled, and rather reckless. His weapons of choice are twin pistols given to him by Red (his ‘Axl Bullets’) and, of course, his shape-shifting ability. He is quite light-weight, thus he can hover over short distances using the thrusters built into his armor. A sharp-shooter, he is dangerous at close range and at a distance.
After being home for a few months since his encounter with Avoria, Axl suddenly finds himself whisked off to yet another strange world...a Digital one. He's not sure what to make of it, or why the universe seems to like to drop him into random situations, but hey, he'll roll with anything.
...But who's the little fish dude?
